Accessibility Statement

Our commitment to making debaryvfa.org usable by everyone, the WCAG 2.2 AA measures we have taken, known limitations, and how to get help.

In short: We want everyone in our community to be able to use our website, including people who use screen readers, keyboards, magnification or other assistive technology. We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA. If anything on the site is hard to use, or you need information in another format, contact us at [email protected] or 386-801-2469 and we will help.

The DeBary Volunteer Firemen’s Association, Inc., doing business as The DeBary Volunteer Fire Support Team (“the Association,” “we,” “us” or “our”), is committed to making debaryvfa.org (the “Site”) accessible to people of all abilities. Fire safety and emergency preparedness information should reach everyone, and so should the chance to volunteer and support our firefighters.

1. Our commitment and standard

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities, including people who are blind or have low vision, are deaf or hard of hearing, or have mobility, cognitive or neurological disabilities. Following them also tends to make a website easier for everyone to use, including people on mobile phones and older devices.

Our website is maintained by volunteers. Accessibility is an ongoing effort, and we review our pages as we add and update content.

2. Measures we have taken

To support accessibility, we have built the Site with the following features:

  • Semantic HTML. Pages use proper headings, landmarks (such as header, navigation, main content and footer), lists and tables so that screen readers and other assistive technologies can understand the page structure.
  • Keyboard navigation. Menus, links, buttons, forms and the shop can be used with a keyboard alone, and interactive elements show a visible focus indicator.
  • Skip link. A “Skip to content” link at the top of each page lets keyboard and screen reader users jump past the navigation menu to the main content.
  • Color contrast. Text and important interface elements are designed to meet WCAG contrast requirements, and we do not rely on color alone to convey information.
  • Text alternatives. Meaningful images include alternative (alt) text describing their content or purpose. Decorative images are marked so that screen readers skip them.
  • Reduced motion. Animations and transitions respect your device’s “reduce motion” setting. If you have turned on reduced motion, non-essential animations are minimized or turned off.
  • Accessible forms. Our contact, hall-use, presentation and volunteer forms have visible labels, clear instructions and error messages. Our anti-spam protection uses a hidden field rather than a visual puzzle or CAPTCHA, so you will not be asked to identify images or distorted text.
  • Responsive, resizable design. Pages adapt to different screen sizes and can be zoomed up to 200% without losing content or functionality.
  • Descriptive links and clear language. We try to write link text that makes sense on its own and to explain safety information in plain English.

3. Known limitations

Despite our efforts, some content may not yet be fully accessible. We are aware of the following limitations:

  • Historical and archival photographs. Our History pages include photographs from more than seven decades of the Association’s records. Some older photos have only brief descriptions, because the people, places or details shown are not always documented. We are adding fuller descriptions over time and welcome help from community members who can identify what is shown.
  • Scanned documents. Some historical documents or newsletters, if posted, may be scanned images or PDFs that are not fully accessible to screen readers.
  • Third-party content and services. Some links take you to websites we do not control, such as Facebook, PayPal, Venmo, and government or safety organizations. We cannot guarantee the accessibility of those websites. If you have trouble using a third-party service to support us, contact us and we will help you give or order another way.
  • Cookie consent banner. Our cookie banner is provided by a third-party tool (CookieYes). We have configured it to be usable with a keyboard and screen reader, but if you encounter any difficulty, please let us know.

4. Compatibility

The Site is designed to work with recent versions of major web browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge, on desktop and mobile devices, and with common assistive technologies such as screen readers and screen magnifiers. Older browsers and assistive technologies may not display all features correctly.

5. Feedback and requests for help

We welcome your feedback. If you have difficulty using any part of the Site, find an accessibility barrier, or have suggestions for improvement, please tell us. It helps if you include:

  • the web address (URL) of the page;
  • a description of the problem; and
  • the browser, device and any assistive technology you were using.

You can reach us by email at [email protected] (subject line “Accessibility”), by phone at 386-801-2469, or through our contact page. Our volunteers aim to respond within 5 business days and will work with you to provide the information or service you need, and to fix the problem where we can.

6. Alternative formats and other ways to reach us

If you need information from the Site in another format, such as large print, plain text by email, or read to you over the phone, just ask. You can also complete any task offered on the Site by contacting us directly, including:

  • asking a question or requesting a fire-safety presentation;
  • requesting use of the Association Hall (see Facility Usage);
  • expressing interest in volunteering; and
  • ordering a challenge coin or making a donation (coin orders can be emailed to [email protected]).

If you plan to attend one of our events or meetings and need an accommodation, please contact us in advance so we can do our best to help.

7. Ongoing improvement

We check new and updated pages for accessibility as part of our publishing process, and we review the Site periodically using automated tools and manual testing, including keyboard-only navigation. We will update this statement as we make improvements or learn of new limitations.
